Islandora 8 depends on microservices running asynchronously in the background to produce derivative media objects to be attached to an original file.
The derived objects are analogous to Islandora 7 datastreams. They can be web friendly versions of the original file to allow a more useful and attractive display, or they can pull information from the original asset to aid in discovery or deeper understanding.
Example media includes thumbnails, OCRed text, web friendly image and playback formats, and technical metadata.
In this short talk we’ll go through each of the steps required to produce an additional media object. I’ll be using the FITS microservice created by the CANARIE RDM project as an example.
